In September 2012, my husband and I hired Nick Balding of Balding Brothers in Wilmington, NC to do a kitchen renovation. The job entailed the installation of custom cabinetry, granite countertops, custom made tile, new and previously purchased appliances, and recessed as well as pendant lighting. Also completed was the painting of trim, walls, and ceilings, the refinishing of all the hardwood floors, and some minor electrical, plumbing and HVAC work.
Shortly after contacting Nick, he came to our home on a week night to describe his services and discuss how they might make our “ideal kitchen” a reality. Several weeks later, he spent a Saturday afternoon taking us to the homes of previous clients so we could see his work firsthand. Based on the work we saw, the comments we heard from previous clients, his broad experience in the building trade, and his polite, professional demeanor, we decided to work with him. Soon after, we began the planning process. Based on pictures we provided and some lengthy discussions, Nick created a computer rendered layout of our new kitchen. After reworking it to our preferences, we signed a formal contract. Several months later, demolition began. During this phase, Nick brought us to area vendors to select the cabinet style and stain, countertop, tile backsplash, lighting, appliances, paint, and cabinet hardware.
Having renovated several kitchens in the past, this experience was excellent. Despite some melt-downs on our end when reno-fatigue was at its worst, he was always calm, centered, pragmatic, responsive, polite, and diligent.
Like every renovation we’d done in the past, this undertaking also had its “unforeseen problems.” Most were minor and Nick handled them quickly and capably. One situation, however, was serious and required many tradesmen to fix. In handling issues both big and small, it became apparent that Nick had rapid access to high-caliber tradesmen. He minimized downtime by scheduling workers efficiently. He maximized outcome by hiring experts.
Overall, Nick and his crew did an outstanding job. We wanted a kitchen with an Arts & Crafts simplicity; floor-to-ceiling cherry cabinetry; Motowi Tile; and a library ladder. Nick delivered it all and so much more.

I would highly recommend the Balding Brothers for restoration and remodeling. My husband and I are owners of a house that was built in 1830 and remodeled in the late 1960’s. It needed alot of work! We first used the Balding Brothers in early 2009 to make a half bath upstairs into a full bath and to redo the floors and a closet. We were so happy with the job they did that a few months later we contracted with them again to do work downstairs. They redid the kitchen, brought back a back parlor that had been made into a very ugly bathroom, put in a half bath, and made a pantry area out of a back hallway. two years later we had them rebuild the front porch. We have been very pleased with their workmanship, the cleanliness of the worksite, and the vision they have brought to the projects. We have recommended them to several of our neighbors and we all have been very happy with them and would definitely use them again.Sharon Stiles,
Balding Brothers did a fantastic job on our kitchen. They were professional and punctual from day one. We truly appreciated how they presented us with different design options and never pressured us into anything we were not comfortable with. Once the project started they were efficient, organized, and respectful of our home. It was a pleasure working with the Balding Brothers team and we will absolutely use them for our next project.elhp,
I have worked with Balding Brothers on several occasions and they are a first class group. They did a full renovation on my house (a 1923 home) and have done several commercial projects for me. Nick Balding is reputable & easy to work with & Catherine has a great eye for details. These guys do it right the first time, and are accountable for their work.W Labney,
It’s tough to imagine an outfit I’d rather have working on my house than Balding Bros. They started with expanding our bedroom closet, then did a major refit on our (only) bathroom and then moved right into a kitchen gut and complete re-do. They were easy and pleasant to work with from the initial discussion to the estimate through the construction and clean-up. Their standards for courtesy, tidiness, and quality of work are the highest. They get jobs done on time and on budget, and their terms and billing are transparent. We look forward to our next major project with them in a couple of months.Phillip Reid,
Over the last few years I’ve referred my clients and friends to the Balding Brother because in every instance their honesty, vision, commitment and sensitivity to client needs have been unparalleled. When a buyer looks at a home and says, “But I need a larger tub and a shower,” or “I need my wine cellar in this house somewhere,” or “How can we create outdoor living space on this tiny porch?” or “My foundation is ruined!” I always know to call Nick Balding. He always answers the call. On many occasions he’s met me at a property that an out-of-town buyer wants to buy and improve. He’s listened to the issues important to my clients, drawn preliminary plans and then contacted my clients. And the next thing I knew all the work is complete. I can’t recommend them more highly.Balding Fan,
They designed and built a gorgeous deck for us; used the highest quality materials. They took great pride in the job and it paid off. The deck faces onto a golf course and we get compliments from golfers passing by all the time. Nick and his men are gentlemen – honest and respectful of us and our home.S Mendy,
We selected Balding Brothers because we had confidence in their ability to produce quality work. I knew that this addition, particularly the back porch and stairs, would be like building a watch because every piece had to be carefully measured and cut. They performed this difficult task with the ease of old-world craftsmanship. We were happy to see Balding Brothers arrive every morning, and just a little sad to see them leave when the work was complete.Charles,
This is our last remodeling on a house we have experimented with, painted, remodeled, and loved for 25 years. We’ve been planning this porch and garage since we bought the house in 1986. Balding Brothers exceeded our expectations with this wonderful addition. We could not have selected a better contractor for this project.Charles & Lynne,
